If you allow Carbonite to maintain your encryption key, these restrictions do not apply. And if you opt for the private encryption key method, you cannot use the Carbonite web interface, the mobile app, or the courier recovery service. However, if you lose that private encryption key, Carbonite has no way of helping you recover your backup. With the private-key option, you are the only person who can decrypt your backup. You can either maintain a private encryption key locally (a Windows-only feature) or let Carbonite manage it, instead. In addition, 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology provides an additional level of security during the data transmission process.” (Editors' Note: Livedrive is owned by Ziff Davis, PCMag's parent company.) Your Security and Privacy With CarboniteĬarbonite says of its file encryption that “all data is encrypted before it leaves a customer’s computer using time-tested technologies like Blowfish and Triple DES encryption. The mobile app cannot back up files-it only provides access to already backed-up files. Carbonite offers a free 15-day trial (no credit card needed) of its plans, but there's no permanent, low-storage free plan like those of IDrive (10GB free) or OpenDrive (5GB free).Ĭarbonite has apps for Windows and macOS computers and a mobile companion app for Android and iOS. Backblaze’s unlimited storage plan for a single computer is similar to Carbonite Safe’s, but costs less, at $70 per year. While covering only one PC for the base price is not uncommon, IDrive offers 2TB of combined storage for as many computers and mobile devices as you like for about the same price ($79.50 per year). Each additional 100GB of storage adds $100 per year to the cost. Carbonite does sell a plan called Carbonite Safe Backup Pro ($287.99 per year) that supports up to 25 computers, but it includes a measly 250GB of space. You should look elsewhere if you need licenses for multiple computers, as Carbonite Safe's Basic, Plus, and Prime plans require you to pay the full subscription price for each computer you back up. Acronis Cyber Protect Home bundles an in-house security suite with its subscription plans, too. Having this dedicated antivirus solution, complete with ransomware protection, is another way you can help protect your devices and data, so it adds significant value. PCMag's lead security analyst Neil Rubenking gave this Editors' Choice-winning antivirus a rating of 4.5 stars when he reviewed it in 2021. Backblaze, by contrast, offers the service for free-if you return the drive.īoth the Plus and Prime plans for Carbonite Safe include a one-device subscription to Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus, which is owned by Carbonite's parent company OpenText. You get one such free recovery per year, and every additional request costs $59.99. You can get that same type of recovery-by-mail service from IDrive. Carbonite's Prime plan ($149.99 per year) reduces the cost of that courier service to $9.99, with the option to add expedited shipping for $19.99. There are additional fees for not returning cords or drives. For Basic and Plus users, the courier service request costs $99.99, which includes expedited shipping. You'd use it if your hard drive were destroyed or if you didn't have the time or bandwidth to download hundreds of gigabytes of restored files. Each plan offers a small discount if you pay for two or three years in advance.Ĭarbonite offers a courier recovery service, in which the company ships you a copy of your data on an external drive. You have to do that second task manually with Basic plans. The Plus upgrade option ($119.99 per year) adds the ability to back up external drives and automatically upload videos. For $83.99 per year, the Basic plan gets you unlimited backup space for one Windows PC or Mac. How Much Does Carbonite Safe Cost?Ĭarbonite Safe's pricing is straightforward. You're better off with Editors' Choice winners IDrive or Shadow Protect SPX Desktop. Carbonite Safe works fine for basic backup needs, but that’s not enough to differentiate itself in this crowded category. Unlike many similar services, Carbonite Safe doesn’t let you share files from your online storage. It also restricts external and network drive backups to premium accounts. It requires a separate license-for which you pay a separate fee-for each computer you back up. Carbonite Safe is one of the easiest online backup services to use, but it doesn’t lead the pack when it comes to features or value.
